In recent developments within hair transplantation, our collaborative study, published in the Dermatologic Surgery journal’s article titled “Beard and Body Hair Transplantation by Follicular Unit Excision Using a Skin-Responsive Device: A Multicenter Study,” focuses on a novel Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technology. This innovative approach aims to address challenges associated with diverse skin and hair characteristics in body hair transplant (BHT) procedures.
Global Collaboration
Our international research team of the multicenter study, led by me and spanning across the United States, Colombia, Mexico, and India, focused on investigating the application of the skin-responsive technique in beard and body hair transplantation.
Key Findings
Our research’s primary focus was applying the skin-responsive technique to beard and body hair transplantation. The Dr. UGraft Zeus – an advanced Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technology that I have the honor of inventing, exhibited improved wound healing and significantly reduced graft transection rates.
Here are our key findings:
1. Patient Demographics
82 patients, with an average age of 48.9 years, participated in the study.
2. Graft Transection Rates with Skin-responsive UGraft BHT
Graft damage rates for beard and body hair Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) consistently stayed below 7%. This is a notable drop from previously recorded 10% -20 % damage rates in Beard FUE and 20 % -30 % damage rates in BHT.
3. Patient Satisfaction with UGraft BHT
All patients in the study were highly satisfied, with 79.1% describing themselves as “very happy” with their outcomes at the six-month follow-up.
4. Surgeon Willingness to perform BHT
Surgeons expressed an increased willingness to perform beard and body FUE using our device. The inclination to conduct Beard FUE rose from 73.4% to 100% following the use of the UGraft Zeus. Simultaneously, the willingness to perform Body FUE rose from 46.6% to 100%.
Significance of the BHT Study
Breakthrough for Severe Baldness
The significance of our study lies in its potential to address severe baldness through Body Hair Transplantation (BHT), providing an alternative for those facing challenges with traditional scalp donors.
Remedy for Previous Hair Transplant Issues
BHT serves as a remedy for individuals with overharvested or depleted scalp donor areas, addressing concerns related to the success of previous procedures.
Expanding Access to a Younger Demographic
Expanding access to a younger demographic is another crucial aspect of our findings. Typically, young patients in their early 20s are denied hair transplantation because of the unpredictable nature of their hair loss, thus the doctor’s inability to predict the donor hair requirement of the patient in the long run. A patient with abundant body and beard hair supply improves their odds of qualifying for a hair transplant even at an earlier age due to the significantly increased donor supply pool. In other words, BHT opens possibilities for a broader range of individuals seeking effective hair restoration procedures, mitigating concerns related to future hair loss and limitations with scalp donors.
Enhancing Aesthetic Outcomes
Furthermore, the innovative use of body hair in transplants, such as incorporating pubic hair for eyebrow procedures, enhances aesthetic outcomes. This approach allows for greater customization and precision in achieving desired aesthetic results, marking a noteworthy development in the field.
